We have received your application to audition for the MSO Chorus. If your application is successful, we will contact you to arrange a suitable audition date and time.
Audition requirements
In the audition you will be asked to sing the following:
- A piece of your own choice lasting no more than 3 minutes, with written piano accompaniment. This should be a piece that is classical in nature, and that you know well and feel confident singing. It can be either a solo piece (an aria from an opera or oratorio, a hymn, a folk tune etc.) or an excerpt that is part of a choral work. Please do not prepare musical theatre or pop music.
- Vocal range exercises
- Aural tests
- A short piece of sight-reading. Ability to read music is a requirement of singing in the MSO Chorus.
An accompanist will be provided for you, as will access to warm-up rooms prior to your audition. Please ensure that your chosen piece has piano accompaniment, and that you bring a copy of the accompaniment for the pianist.
The audition will last no longer than 15 minutes.
What do I wear to the audition?
There is no dress code required for the chorus auditions. Please wear whatever you are comfortable with.
After the audition
If your audition is successful, you will receive an email to confirm your availability for the 2026 season. Acceptance into the MSO Chorus is subject to the condition that you will reach a minimum of 80% attendance of rehearsals.
In the event that you are unsuccessful, we will try to give constructive feedback upon request and welcome you to audition again the following year.
How much does it cost?
We do not require an administration fee and there is no official cost to join the MSO Chorus. All music and folders are provided by us. We do require chorus members to wear formal black performance attire, which you will need to purchase if you do not already own. Car parking, travel arrangements and refreshments etc for rehearsals and performances are at your own cost.
When do rehearsals take place?
Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 7:30 – 10:00pm, with the occasional possibility of extra evening rehearsals during the week as required (or when there are public holidays). During performance/production weeks there are rehearsals or performances on nearly every night of the week. You will be made aware of the schedule far in advance in order to accommodate any other life commitments. You will not be required to rehearse during a 9-5 weekday.
