Barber Summer Music for woodwind quintet
Carlos Salzedo Concerto for Harp and Seven Winds

About this performance

This delightful chamber program where harp and wind instruments gather in unique and colourful combinations, brings together music by composers from America and France.

Inspired by the poem of the same name by Rainer Maria Rilke, Herbsttag (Autumn Day) was written for flute, bassoon and harp by Uruguayan-American Composer Miguel del Aguila. The composer writes: “It is the atmosphere and the mood of loneliness and existential drama of the poem that I tried to recreate in my music”.

Chamber arrangements of Ravel’s Minuet antique and a suite from Le Tombeau de Couperin find new intimacy in the combination of harp, oboe and bassoon, whereas Samuel Barber’s Summer Music for wind quintet conveys a relaxing summertime day.

French composer Carlos Salzedo’s Concerto for Harp and Seven Wind Instruments showcases the harp’s versatility and virtuosity. This piece is known for its exploration of musical moods, ranging from romantic and reflective to restless and fantastical.
